Q&A with Dr. Hassell
Q: What are your key skills or background experience?
A: My journey in veterinary medicine started in middle school as a shelter volunteer. I helped develop and lead a Trap, Neuter, Release (TNR) program and eventually worked my way into the clinic. I earned my Animal Science degree from Texas A&M University while working as a veterinary assistant at two Houston-area ER hospitals. After vet school at Texas A&M CVM, I joined the Animal Emergency Hospital of North Texas (AEHNT) in Grapevine, where I’ve been able to pursue my passion for emergency medicine.
Leadership wasn’t initially on my radar, but thanks to the encouragement of my mentor, Dr. Diane McGee, I co-chaired the MD role for two years. Her support and the Ethos network have empowered me to grow into this role and continue learning every day.
Q: Do you have any clinical interests or medical topics you’d like to write about?
A: I thrive in high-intensity ER environments—think 20+ ICU cases and a packed work-up board! I especially enjoy toxicity cases, anaphylaxis, Addisonian crises, and “Blocked Toms.” These adrenaline-pumping scenarios are where I feel most in my element.
Q: What are your unique abilities or passions?
A: I perform best in chaos. When the team is firing on all cylinders and we’re delivering top-tier care under pressure, I’m in my zone. I’m passionate about lifelong learning, a value instilled in me by Dr. McGee. I love continuing education and picking up new insights to share with our team.
Q: Tell us a bit about your personal background and fun facts.
A: I’m a car enthusiast with dreams of restoring an older model Porsche someday. I’m also a foodie—if there’s a new restaurant in town, I’ll be there! And when it comes to pets, I’m partial to corgis and black cats. Just ask my one-eyed cat, Wazowski!
